Before Anyone Digs

The right contractor will slow down, explain the problem clearly, show you the camera footage, and give options.

• Confirm the contractor holds a valid state plumbing or sewer contractor license.
• Verify they carry general liability insurance (ideally $1M minimum in coverage).
• Ask for proof of workers’ compensation insurance (if a worker is injured on your property without it, you could be held liable).
• Check their standing with your state’s contractor licensing board online.

Insist on an Inspection

• Most reputable contractors will not quote a repair without first running a sewer camera through the line. Be skeptical of any diagnosis without inspection — it’s guesswork.
• The inspection should produce a video recording. Ask for a copy for your records.
• The report should identify the exact location, depth, and nature of the problem.
